Visaton VOX 253 MTI Ladylike

The VOX 253 MTI, a 3 way floorstanding speaker, is an original Visaton kit. This kit is a collaboration between CNC cabinet designers, Visaton and the magazine Hobby HiFi. The original VOX 253 became quite a bit slimmer since a separate cabinet was designed for the subwoofer.

This subwoofer cabinet was equipped with two bass drivers, placed symmetrically opposite one another, practically an impulse compensated system (see also Hexagon by Bernd Timmermanns).

The titanium midrange / bass driver and the MHT magnetostat are located - as in the original VOX 253 MIT - in the upper part of the much slimmer cabinet.

Visaton VOX 253 MTI, Ladylike aus HH 4/2006

The VOX 253 MTI Ladylike shows the following characteristics:

  • The system consists of two slim satellites and a separate, impulse compensated subwoofer
  • The subwoofer is powerful and relatively large (HxWxD) 52 x 90 x 40 cm
  • The satellites are beautifully designed and quite slim (HxWxD): 110 x 17 x 23 cm
  • The trio sounds phenomenal

Technical data:

  • frequency range: 28-30 000 Hz (-8dB)
  • power handling (continuous/programme): 150 / 300 Watt
  • crossover frequencies: 250 Hz and 4000 Hz
  • average SPL: 83 dB (1W/1m)
  • average SPL: 86 dB (2.83V/1m)
  • impedance: 4 Ohm

The Visaton VOX 253 MTI kit contains per speaker:

  • 1 x MHT 12 tweeter
  • 2 x TI 100 midrange drivers, 8 Ohm
  • 1 x TIW 250 XS bass driver, 8 Ohm
(one pair going into the sub)
  • 1 x terminal
  • 4 x bags damping material
  • 1 x crossover VOX 253 MTI, assembled
  • 20 x assorted screws
  • 1 x cover for the bass driver mounted on the side
  • 2 x cable for internal wiring
  • description and building instruction

It's up to you:

a) you purchase the original Visaton kit
and buy 2 coils to re-equip the crossover:

The kit Order No. V-5987,
Price per pair (without cabinet) EUR 2602,90 excl. VAT: € 2187.31 / $ 2340.42

For a separate Subwoofer the crossover has to be changed:
the two bass coils have to be exchanged for two 4.7 coils.
We recommend the Mundorf i-core BS-core coil with 6.8 mH,
of which 2 are needed: EUR 46,90 excl. VAT: € 39.41 / $ 42.17

Additionally you need loudspeaker cable (to connect the subwoofer)
and bi-wiring terminals (e.g.: T122/96 MS Au),
of which you need 3: EUR 9,00 excl. VAT: € 7.56 / $ 8.09

b) you purchase our kit with our
tried and tested high-end crossover with all required components:

- the 8 drivers (2x MHT 12, 4x TI 100, 2x TIW 250 XS),
- 5 bi-wiring terminals (one for each satellite, 3 for
the subwoofer for connecting the satellites and the amplifier)
- 15 metre cable Inakustik Premium LS Silver (silver plated)
- PAN and Allen screws 5x30
- 8 Pack / 16 mats damping material
- sealing tape
- the crossover components described below
- the building instruction

Kit price for 2 satellites and subwoofer,
with gold plated terminals and silver plated cable without cabinet:

Description of our VOX 253 MTI Ladylike high-end crossover

As requested by many of our customers we also offer a version with high-end crossover, that was already highly appreciated by customers who had bought the VOX 253 MIT. This version contains the coil adapted for the subwoofer.

The crossovers components that need to be mounted on 2 universal PCB (one for left, one for right) are as follows (per stereo channel):
- 2 x universal PCB's 205x140 mm for wiring up components

for MHT 12 magnetostat:
- Mundorf MKP Supreme 3.3 μF / 800 V
- baked varnish air core coil 0.47 mH / 0.41 Ohm
- Mundorf MKP capacitor 6.8 μF / 400 V
- MOX10 1.5 Ohm/10Watt (brown-green-gold)
- MOX10 8.2 Ohm/10Watt (grey-red-gold)

for TI 100 midrange drivers:
- MKP capacitor 100uF / 400V, improving transparency.
- 2 x MOX10 4.7 Ohm (yellow-purple-gold) in parallel, instead of single 2.2 Ohm, since
the 2.2 Ohm would get extremely hot already at 10 Watt per driver.
- H core coil 3.3 mH (a 2 mm air core coil would be even better )
- MKP capacitor 68uF / 400V, improving transparency.
- baked varnish air core coil 0.82 mH / 0.54 Ohm
- Mundorf MKP capacitor 0.47 μF / 630 V instead of 2 x ELCO special,
resulting in a dramatic sound improvement.
- Mundorf MKP capacitor 6.8 μF / 400 V
- baked varnish air core coil 0.33 mH / 0.26 Ohm
- 0.5 mm ferrite core coil 10 mH / 3.48 Ohm (for resonance suppression)
- Mundorf, 150 μF/63 V, ELCO etched (for resonance suppression)

for the bass driver, where quality is less critical:
- Mundorf H125-core coil with 6.8 mH
- ELCO, non-etched 100uF/ 35Volt
- ELCO, non-etched 33uF / 50Volt
- ELCO, non-etched 47uF / 50Volt
- MOX10 resistor, 6.8 Ohm (blue-grey-gold)
- 0.6 mm ferrite core coil 22 mH / 4.26 Ohm
- Mundorf, 330 μF/63 V, ELCO etched
- MOX10 4.7 Ohm (yellow-purple-gold)
Please note: a 4.7 Ohm instead of 3.3 Ohm should be used, since the coil has less resistance.
