Jim Thiel produces high quality off-the-shelf loudspeakers.

It therefore made sense to offer his drivers also to the DIY community. Several different units are available - particularly the Thiel coincidently mounted driver is a gem: this is a coax driver where tweeter and bass driver are not only mounted on the same horizontal but also vertical axis resulting in perfect time coherence.

The Thiel coincidence driver is available in four versions: with a conventional magnet or with neodymium, both as shielded (SCS3) or unshielded (SC3).

The featured kit uses the Thiel SC3 with neodymum magnet; a version with conventional magnet is also available requiring only a marginally larger cabinet due to the stronger magnet: the previous One Point Monitor at the 2005 fair in Gelsenkirchen.

Review of the new One Point Monitor in Klang+Ton 2/2008

"At last a loudspeaker that you can pick up and put easily under your arm. At this compact size the weight difference between ferrite and neodymum is quite noticeable. In my listening room whose acoustic properties I know very well, this Thiel speaker showed those qualities that distinguish top hi-fi components. First of all, I am referring to the fact that long-term listening doesn't cause any fatigue. The frequency response is not perfectly flat and that is noticeable during listening sessions. Considering the size of the speaker, bass is astonishingly clear and powerful, displaying an infinite range of timbres. The midrange, where most irritating frequencies occur, is slightly lowered - one reason for the pleasantly warm performance. The high frequencies are again slightly raised, entailing an extremely detailed, airy and transparent sound. The stage between the Thiel pair has such a depth that the imaging ability is certainly the most striking impression. The individual musicians in even larger ensembles clearly take their positions and remain there. Solo instruments are reproduced prominently, but never lose their realistic dimensions. The dynamics of the One Point Monitor definitely allow the playback of rock, electronic music or large orchestral works at high volumes. The real talent of this subtle speaker is, however, the reproduction of top recordings, especially of acoustic instruments. Supplemented with a subwoofer the music knows no bounds."

One Point Monitor with high end crossover

If you require a high grade crossover we recommend our high-end version employing the lowest-loss capacitor in the high frequency path known to us: the Mundorf MCAP Supreme. The inductances determining the sound quality are of copper foil coil type, resulting in a particularly low microphonics effect. Please note that Klang+Ton magazine shows the L2 coil at the wrong location. Our kit comes with a correction.
